Smart Sleep Earplugs – A Sound Sleep Companion

Designed for better sleep. Built with quiet care.

At Design Katte, we are always excited by ideas that aim to improve everyday life. Twins Earplugs is one such project. It’s a smart sleep accessory that helps light sleepers rest peacefully, especially when they share a room with someone who snores.

The Concept

These smart earplugs are made of contour-shaped synthetic rubber designed to sit comfortably around the ear. A support guard holds the plugs securely in place, helping to block out unwanted noise. What makes them unique is their built-in alarm system, which can be activated through a time regulator, a remote control, or a mobile app.

There’s also an extension that ensures a proper fit, making it a thoughtful and comfortable solution for long use during sleep.

Our Role in the Project

The hardware was developed by a close friend’s industrial design studio. We at Design Katte took care of the mobile app design and development. From early testing to refining the user experience, we collaborated closely throughout the hardware development process to ensure that the physical and digital elements worked in harmony.

Key Challenges and Solutions

One of the initial challenges was establishing communication between the hardware and iOS devices. The first version used classic Bluetooth, which brought compatibility issues with Apple’s system. After some back and forth, we decided to move to Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). This helped us achieve a more stable and power-efficient connection across platforms.

Another key aspect was allowing the app to act as a control point for the alarm feature. This required thoughtful syncing between the user interface and the hardware triggers.

Designing for Sleep

Since the app is meant to assist with sound sleep, we gave user comfort top priority. We used a single-page app format so users could access everything quickly without having to tap through multiple screens.

The color palette features darker and calming tones, ideal for use at night. All key actions such as alarm control, battery status, and white noise playback are placed front and center. The layout is minimal, with intuitive controls and soft transitions to avoid any visual strain.

A white noise player is also built in, designed to run quietly in the background. Even if a user wakes up and glances at the screen, they won’t be disturbed by bright lights or complex interactions.

Final Thoughts

Smart earplugs is a thoughtful, human-centered product. We’re proud to have been part of it, supporting both the vision and the execution through our design and development approach.

If you have an idea — whether it’s digital, physical, or somewhere in between — we’re ready to sit with you at the Katte and help bring it to life.
